AI customer service for Shopify stores
Ecommerce support has one dominant question and one dominant cost curve. The question is “where is my order”. The cost curve is seasonal. Get both right and AI support is close to a no-brainer; get the billing model wrong and you will pay for seats in February that you needed in December. Prices verified .
- Volume is seasonal? Choose conversation-based billing (Tidio has a free plan), so quiet months cost less.
- Permanently staffed support team? Per-seat (Text) becomes cheaper and more predictable.
- Running multiple stores or an agency? Flat-rate multi-account pricing (HighLevel) is the only one of the three built for it.

The Shopify-specific problem: WISMO
WISMO — where is my order — is the largest single block of most ecommerce support queues. It spikes after promotions, during peak season, and any time a carrier has a bad week. It is also entirely repetitive: the answer is a tracking status, and the customer only contacts you because finding it themselves was harder than asking.
That makes WISMO the ideal candidate for AI resolution, and it is why ecommerce is one of the few categories where an AI agent has a genuinely high success rate. The failure mode is not accuracy — it is order-data access. An AI agent that cannot see the customer’s actual order status will confidently invent an answer, which is worse than saying nothing.
What each platform does with your store
All three have ecommerce integrations, and integration quality changes often. Rather than assert current feature parity we cannot verify from here, judge them on the dimension that does not change: how the bill behaves as your volume moves.
When you shortlist, verify these five things on each vendor’s own app listing:
- Does the agent read live order and tracking data, or only your help articles?
- Can it handle returns and exchanges, or does it stop at answering?
- What does it do on out-of-stock and pre-order questions?
- Does it hand off to a human with full conversation context, or start over?
- How does it behave during a carrier outage, when every answer is “delayed”?
Cost at 500, 2,000 and 10,000 conversations
Here is how the three billing models scale. These are the structural shapes, not quotes — plug your own numbers into our calculator for an estimate.
| 500 conv/mo | 2,000 conv/mo | 10,000 conv/mo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tidio (per conversation) | Free plan may cover a low volume | Moves up a tier | Top tiers — highest cost of the three |
| Text (per seat + AI meter) | Cheap on seats; AI overage dominates | Two meters both growing | Metered AI resolutions become the main cost |
| HighLevel (flat) | $97–$297 flat | $97–$297 flat | $97–$297 flat |
The pattern worth internalising: only one of these three prices does not move with your traffic. For a store with genuinely spiky demand, that is worth paying a premium for in the quiet months, because it stops your January invoice from punishing your December success.
Setup: what it actually takes
- Point the agent at your help content first. Shipping, returns, sizing, care instructions. This is the cheapest accuracy win available and it takes an afternoon.
- Then connect order data, and test it against ten real orders — including one that has not shipped, one that was returned, and one that is lost in transit.
- Set the escalation rules deliberately. Decide which topics never get an AI answer: damaged goods, chargebacks, anything involving a refund over a threshold you choose.
- Watch it through one peak. The first promotion or holiday period will find every gap in your knowledge base. Staff for that week.
Verdict
| Your store | Pick | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Under ~500 conversations/mo | Tidio | Free plan covers a genuinely small volume; pay only when traffic forces you to |
| Seasonal spikes, 1–2 people | Tidio | Conversation billing means you are not paying for December capacity in June |
| Permanently staffed team, steady volume | Text | Per-seat pricing stops tracking the volume you are trying to grow |
| Multiple stores, brands or clients | HighLevel | Unlimited sub-accounts on a flat fee; nothing else here does this |

The metric to watch
Do not measure ticket reduction — measure deflection rate: the share of conversations the AI closed without a human. That is the number that maps to your saving, and it is the number vendors quote optimistically. Industry benchmarks suggest 50–70% for mature deployments and 30–45% in the first month. WISMO-heavy stores should sit at the top of that range; stores selling complex or made-to-order goods will sit lower.

FAQ
Will AI actually reduce my Shopify support tickets?
Usually not the number of tickets — it resolves a large share of them without a human. Measure deflection, not ticket reduction. The exception is stores that fix the underlying cause: a clear tracking link in the order confirmation email removes WISMO questions entirely, which no AI can match.
Per-conversation or per-seat for a Shopify store?
Per-conversation for most stores, because ecommerce volume is seasonal and seats are not. The exception is a store with a permanently staffed support team and steady volume, where per-seat pricing stops tracking the growth you are trying to create.
What about peak season?
This is where the billing model shows up most clearly. On conversation-based pricing your peak month costs more; on per-seat it costs the same. If your peak is two months a year, per-seat pricing means paying for capacity you do not need for ten months.
Can AI handle returns and exchanges?
Sometimes, and it depends on how much of the process the agent can actually execute rather than describe. Ask each vendor whether the agent can initiate a return, or only explain the policy. Only the first one saves you support time.
